We were curios to see who are the top 5 Defenders in the Premier League.

Therefore we have made an analysis of the statistics achieved by the Premier League players in three categories:

  1. Clearances made by player
  2. Interceptions made by player
  3. Tackles per game by player

The source of the statistics was Whoscored.com

The players that have statistics in all three categories are ranked higher, next criteria for ranking of a player was the average rating.

The players that appeared in only two categories from three, we ranked them by their average rating.

Who are the Top 5 Premier League’s Central Defender?

Number 1:

Shkodran Mustafi – Arsenal

He is on the first position based on his stats, and with average rating of 7.44 from 21 matches played, besides this he has managed to make:

  • 6 Clearances per match,
  • 2.6 Tackles per match, and
  • 2.1 Interception per match.

Number 2:

Christopher Schindler – Huddersfield

Christopher Schindler has managed to get to the 2nd position based on the following stats:

Average Rating: 7.13 and:

  • 7 Clearances per match,
  • 2.5 Tackles per match, and
  • 2 Interceptions per match.

Number 3:

Chris Smalling – Manchester United

Chris Smalling has the 3rd position based on his average rating of 7.26, and 2 other categories:

  • 6.3 Clearances per match, and
  • 2 Interceptions per match.

Number 4:

N’Golo Kante – Chelsea

Even though he isn’t a classical central defender his statistics and performances are above the level of many central defenders.

Kante has an average rating of 7.25 from 26 appearances, and:

  • 3.4 Tackles per match, and
  • 2 Interceptions per match.

Number 5:

Kurt Zouma – Stoke

He is the youngest defender in this ranking with only 23 years of age, he appeared in 28 games this season with 7.16 average rating.

Besides this he has managed to get:

  • 7.1 Clearances per match, and
  • 1.9 Tackles per match.

The season is still on-going these statistics might change but with 30 games played so far, it is less likely that this might considerably change.

Any team looking to strengthen their central defensive line-up should consider these players since they are all young, and they all have many years ahead of them to play on a top professional level.
